Class: Syrah

Tasting Notes

Like Cabernet Sauvignon in Napa Valley, the Sierra Foothills is Syrah country. Like the 2004, this Syrah starts with a smoky nose of grilled fruits and ends with flavors of black cherries and allspice. Made in the lighter style with brisk acidity and mouth-watering tannins, this Syrah pairs beautifully with pork dishes. The floral aromas of this wine are similar to the 2004 Syrah. Medium bodied with full flavors, but not overpowering making a long smooth finish.

Wine Composition

Syrah Sierra Foothills 80%
Cabernet Franc Sierra Foothills 18%
Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2%

Bottled August 2006.

Production notes

The grapes for this Syrah came from Auburn’s Monarch Mine Vineyards, a site with red, high-iron soils and an elevation of 2,300 feet. Cool mountain nights keep the grapes from growing until April. Therefore, harvest doesn’t begin until mid September. The result is Syrah with whopping acidity and astringency that is consistently impressive. 18% Loomis Cabernet Franc and 2% Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon gives this blend color and structure. Each wine was aged in French and American oak barrels for 10 months before blending and bottling.
