GOLD MEDAL in Late Harvest White Dessert Wine

San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition

Tasting Notes

This wine has a luscious late harvest character, with notes of honey, melon and jasmine. The incredibly sweet velvet liquid slides smoothly over the tongue and leaves a lingering taste of Sauvignon Blanc. The wine has light acid and a long slow finish. The wine is excellent as a aperitif or as a dessert. The luscious sweetness is fun for beginning wine drinkers or gourmets looking for a break from intense reds, and the complexity is intriguing to wine professionals.

Wine Composition

Sauvignon Blanc Sierra Foothills 95%

Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley 5%

Production notes

From Jeff Dutra's Belcara Vineyard between Auburn and Foresthill in Placer County, Kevin and Peter Murphy selected a specific section of the vineyard for the late harvest Sauvignon Blanc wine. On August 29, 2009, most of the Sauvignon Blanc (sugar about 24.5 brix) was picked for Terre Rouge Winery in Fiddletown. The harvest season continued with moderate temperatures and little rain the grapes continued to mature and raisin. On October 27, 2009, Peter, Kevin, and a small specialized crew picked the selected grapes from the vineyard. This style of harvest is used in the 'Beerenausslaise' wines of Germany. Raisins, rot and damaged grapes were removed and often, only  partial clusters were picked. The result was approximately three tons of late harvest Sauvignon Blanc. This was delivered to the winery and fermented at 40 degrees. The fermentation was stopped at 10% alcohol, and the wine was cold stabilized several times before being bottled in November 2009.
