1998 Growing Season
"...later than usual harvest, growers faced the possibility of rains, but nature cooperated with a warm and sunny early autumn. Picking started in late September, went into full swing in October and reached completion in early November. The clusters, while small and low in weight, produced elegant fruit with definite personality and complexity. The juice to skin ratio was very low, which translates into extracted wines with concentrated fruit flavors." --Napa Valley Vintners
1999 Growing Season
"A long, cool spring gave way to a mild summer. With only one heat spike recorded in the first part of July, the 1999 vintage ripened under conditions that allowed a long hang-time that resulted in fruit of concentrated varietal flavors with a strong backbone of acid. Harvest got underway following a weekend of intense summer heat late in September. October proved to be a very active month in vineyards and winery crush pads as red and white grapes reached maturity simultaneously. Napa Valley received only a trace of rain from April through October, leading to extremely clean fruit arriving at the wineries." --Napa Valley Vinters
2000 Growing Season
The 21st century in the Napa Valley began with a virtually picture perfect growing season. The almost uneventful spring and summer weather pattern, every grower's dream, produced fruit of exceptional quality. A cool, even growing season throughout, except for a three-day heat stretch of unusually high temperatures in June and ominous rain clouds in late August, led to a compact harvesting period that finished in mid-October. Yields were were average on a per acre basis, however, with numerous post-phylloxera vineyards coming on line, the year's overall tonnage was up noticeably. --Napa Valley Vintners
The Wines
The 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon is 100% Cabernet from the Napa Valley but from two different Vineyards. 60% percent of the fruit came from the Howell Mountain appellation of Napa which provides the good fruit structure and acid. The other 40% of the Cabernet grapes came from the St. Helena area which helps to balance the wine into an elegant style Cab with rich earthy aromas and great varietal flavors.
The 1999 Cabernet is another 60%-40% blend. The 60% came from a late ripening vineyard in East Napa that benefits from the cool breezes of the San Pablo Bay. The 40% came from the Shenandoah Valley in Amador County. An area known to grow some of the oldest vineyards in the state. This blend created a great balance of the two areas and is a truly enjoyable wine.
The 2000 our first and only 100%, single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes came from the same Napa Valley vineyard used in the 1999 Cabernet. Without blending in this vintage you really get a chance to taste the terroir of that particular vineyard. It is located just off of Hagen road near the bottom of Mt. George. The vines get plenty of nutrient rich water coming down the mountain and stay cool during the hottest days of summer due to the breeze blowing off the San Pablo Bay.
